PAYERNE, April 4, 2024 – Swiss Geo Energy (SGE) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the surface research permit (PRSU) for the GeoCogen La Broye project, which was granted on March 22 by the State of Vaud.
This new permit paves the way for a geophysical campaign using seismic reflection in the Broye area to verify the geothermal potential. At this stage, the operations are planned between fall 2025 and spring 2026. Unprecedentedly in our country, this study will also examine whether the geological conditions are favourable for producing lithium and/or native hydrogen, a naturally produced renewable resource. Furthermore, this project aims to cover an exploration area of nearly 200 km², shared between the cantons of Vaud and Fribourg.
This authorisation marks the second significant milestone for SGE following the successful 3D seismic campaign for its first project, GeoCogen Eclépens.
The GeoCogen La Broye project aims to produce electricity and heat to supply the district heating networks in the Payerne, Avenches, and Fribourg regions. If the geothermal potential is confirmed, one or more hydrothermal geothermal power plants could be established.
SGE relies on the positive experience gained during last fall’s measurement campaign in the Eclépens region to prepare for the Avenches and Payerne campaign. The collected data will be used to create a three-dimensional map of the underground structures and to identify the most promising drilling sites.
Moreover, the project includes the exploration of lithium and native hydrogen resources, both essential for the energy transition.

Furthermore, we are taking steps to obtain permission from the Fribourg cantonal authorities to obtain surface measurements on Fribourg cantonal territory,” states Pascal Vinard, SGE’s Technical Director.

The company emphasises that the geophysical measurement campaign in Eclépens demonstrated its ability to conduct regional explorations that respect the environment while achieving one of Europe’s most detailed and dense results. The development of GeoCogen La Broye will follow this same approach of technological innovation and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.
